Hello, nice to meet you! I’m a GeePee

So there is always cool ‘stuff’ to do around Joburg…even though at times it really may not seem like it, and lets be honest sometimes it REALLY feels like that, and then other times its too expensive to even comprehend going…selling a vital organ is always an option though.

*dramatic music* Enter the GeePee card ! The GeePee card is a loyalty card of sorts that is free to all citizens of Gauteng, and I suppose seeing as they only need an email address for you to register the rest of SA…and even the world!

The concept of the card is to allow ‘Gautengers’ to enjoy the province for less. This means up to 80% off of events, entrance fees, and keep you up to date on all that’s happening around town.

The card can be downloaded and costs nothing (when was the last time you heard that) or a plastic card can be picked up at the following malls on September 17…that’s tomorrow so get cracking :

Lakeside Mall, Ekurhuleni
East Rand Mall, Ekurhuleni
Menlyn Shopping Centre, Tswhane
Brooklyn Mall – Design Quarter, Tswhane
Woodmead Shopping Centre, Johannesburg
River Square Shopping Centre, Vereeniging
The Zone @ Rosebank, Johannesburg
Comaro Crossing, Johannesburg

The website is pretty cool so check it out, download your card for free and start getting great discounts for free! http://www.gauteng.net/campaigns/geepee/

Refuse the hour

Refuse the Hour is a two week programme of live performance events created by artist William Kentridge, composers Philip Miller and François Sarhan, dancer
and choreographer Dada Masilo, video editor Catherine Meyburgh and performance director Sue Pam-Grant. There is a single cine-concert of the work of the innovative late French filmmaker Georges Méliès, who made over 520 short films between 1896 and 1913. The programme, which is presented by The Market Theatre in association with the Goodman Gallery and the French Institute of South Africa, includes work made in the past few years and premieres a new dance concert, Dancing with Dada.

Bears and marshmallows what more could a girl ask for?

I’m not entirely sure why the majority of my childhood memories are dictated by the kind of sandwich I  was eating at the time but I always remember eating (and not enjoying) strawberry jam sandwiches at the Joburg Zoo. The past few weeks however I’ve had way better zoo experiences.

Last Saturday I went to the zoo for my friend Cherrys birthday, we each paid R70 and got a guided tour of the zoo at night, plus a bon fire and marshmallows. Although the tour was only a couple of hours it was well worth having a guide…beats an information board any day!

Yesterday accompanied by picnic basket with tasty treats (no strawberry jam this time!) me and my friend watched Shakespeare Dreaming, a wickedly funny parody of Shakespeare’s style. It really was awesome to sit under the trees eating cupcakes and Grapetizer while watching some of the best SA actors fool around on stage all the while listening to the smooth tones of Timothy Maloi and co. Definitely one of the best evenings out in a while!

So do it! Grab a friend and go to the zoo, you might get a big surprise!

500 you say? Spring you say?

First things first hit 500 views today…that’s cool right…THANKS MOM!

I hope that you are now educated in penis enlargements and chicken wings.

Last week I celebrated spring day by hauling a cripple around with me and eating Paella at the Arts on Main Spring Night Market.

The market is open every Sunday and the first Thursday of every month!

The cripple

  • What was cool:
  • The fact that it was Spring of course!
  • Live Music
  • More tables
  • Different stalls (for those of you that frequent the market on Sundays)
  • Awesome vintage 80s sunglasses
  •  Paella! R50 a plate
  •  Humus- check out ‘The Organic People’ stall in the food section
 What was not so cool:
  •  The crowds- it got way to busy and difficult to even walk around
  •  Trying to buy a drink- pretty much impossible with only one bartender at most of the bars.
  •   Waking up early for work the next day

Awesome AUTHENTIC 80s shades. R700 but well worth it!

What the Bokke and penis enlargements have in common

When J.K. Rowling wrote about you-know-who she forgot to mention you-know-where, i.e. Malibongwe Drive at 7 in the morning.
I usually steer clear of it at all costs but earlier this week I attended a conference at the Coca Cola Dome and HAD to travel along it to get there. So there I was, stuck in traffic. After having checked my phone (someone text me please!), read all the headlines and waved off what seemed like an endless line of street hawkers, selling everything from the latest Harry Potter DVD to blow up airplanes…because you never know when u might need a blow up airplane! One particular man caught my eye; he was passing out flyers that said BOKS 2011 in big green letters on them. Seeing as I hadn’t really done much in way of support for the 2011 World Cup I decided to ‘do my bit’ by reading a flyer…that’s right I’m behind u all the way Bokke.
When I unfolded the flyer I was greeted with the most fantastic bit of advertising EVER…that’s right EVER.  On the one side as I’ve already said the flyer said BOKS 2011, on the other side however was a advert for Prof. Delipiero promising not only to increase the size of my boobs…but also my bobs…sometimes a girl just needs a bob adjustment. Not only could Dr. Delipiero make all my dreams come true but he could: “bring back to see your enemies and make demands on them using a mirror.”—what a nice helpful guy! My GP has nothing on him, plus if my GP could advertise half as well as Dr. Delipiero he would have an even bigger holiday house.
Only in SA would someone use the national team to sell penis enlargements. On that note good luck to the Boks, may the force of Dr. Delipiero be with you.

Air Force Memorial

When I was younger I had the luxury of going on a a fair amount of family holidays within South Africa. Minus the warm egg mayo sandwiches and the long boring drives...: “Mooooommm are we there yet?” I really loved them and will always hold great memories for me. One thing I remember loathing was the frequent stops to check out the little museums and memorials along the way.
As I learnt more South African history through school and then University I really grew to love it. I think that as South Africans we often tend to put all our efforts into one particular theme or one particular event…although granted some of them were more important.
There are however hundreds of little forgotten memorials and museums dotted all around South Africa…you may have seen the signs while driving down to the coast…or even on the way to Pretoria. Yesterday I followed one of these signs and discovered a little bit of South African history first hand.
Between Centurion and Pretoria lies the Airforce memorial to the 3000 members of the Air Force who have died while serving South Africa. The memorial offers a unrivaled view of the base and its runways.
This building is designed in the shape of a triangular star and consists of three wings. One if these is a neutral chapel for family services. A memorial hall and memorial stone on a scarlet red background takes up the centre.

Why: stunning views, a quick lesson in history

Where: Route 101 (Old Johannesburg Road) , Zwartkop Air Force Base , Old Johannesburg Road,Valhalla.
